What to wear in a branding photoshoot?
What to wear in your branding photoshoots?
Branding portraits are fun! You know when you need to get fresh photos for your business profile, or that new blog post you need with your photos, or just because you need it for your social media content. One of the frequently asked questions we get is, "What do you think I should wear?".
Here are some pointers in helping you decide which outfits to wear on your branding portrait and lifestyle session.
1. I always emphasize comfort. You have to be comfortable with what you are wearing. If you are comfortable with what you wear, it will exude confidence, which will help bring out the pizzazz! Also, know that photoshoots can mean a lot of movements here and there (posing and sometimes walking for location shoots).
2. Think of your goal. So what's the purpose of these branding portraits? Are these to show you in action at work? Or will this be more of personal storytelling about you? Or will this be used for a launch campaign that needs some thematic and precise look?
3. When are you planning to use the photos? Think of weather and season. Are you hoping to use the images for bright summer content? Then you have to dress up like it's summer, even when your photo shoot is taking place in the middle of February. And vice versa. Know when you are using the pictures so you can dress accordingly.
4. Know the location/backdrop. This helps you understand what colors you will have to avoid. Will you blend in? Are you standing out from the background? Is it a good color match? Others will initially think, "oh, my green striped dress will look magnificently good on me." Yes, I'm sure it will, but not when the background is a patch of green trees and branches.
5. Wear the style you want to be associated with your brand. Probably the most important for branding photos. Remember, you are taking the images representing you and your business. Pick pieces of clothing and accessories that will create an overall look relevant to the idea of your brand. The first thing that you should think about is what message you want to send. As a company, what do you want to come off as? Are you the serious professional, the cool professional, the very edgy artist?
Your main goal is to feel comfortable, and your next goal is to show the look that speaks of you and your brand. Whatever you feel like wearing, always consult with your photographer. It also never hurts to hire a stylist if the project budget allows it.
